Making Tax Digital (MTD) represents the biggest change to the way Income Tax Self Assessment is managed since Self Assessment was introduced more than 30 years ago.
From April 2026, Making Tax Digital became mandatory for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income of more than £50,000. From 6 April 2027, the requirements will also apply to those with qualifying income of more than £30,000, who will be required to submit quarterly digital updates.
We’re here to help you understand what these changes mean for you, make the transition as straightforward as possible, and ensure you don’t fall behind or face unnecessary penalties.
If you’re affected by the changes coming into effect in April 2027, you may receive a letter from HMRC explaining that you’ll need to comply with Making Tax Digital. HMRC will assess whether you need to comply with Making Tax Digital based on your 2025-2026 tax return (which does not need to be filed until January 31st 2027.) So you may not receive a letter until much closer to the April 2027 deadline leaving little time to get organised. HMRC state that it is the tax-payer’s responsibility to ensure they are registered for Making Tax Digital, so if you think your 2025-2026 turnover is likely to exceed over £30,000 it’s a good idea to plan now to get ahead of the deadline.
To help all local business owners understand the mandatory changes for Making Tax Digital we’re hosting a free-to-attend seminar.
Experienced tax professional and Chartered Accountant, Danielle, will provide an overview of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax and offer advice on next steps to ensure you’re able to complete your first quarterly digital submission and avoid any fines and penalties.
A complimentary breakfast roll plus tea and coffee is included and there’ll be a chance to ask any questions you may have to our team of experts. Everyone is welcome to come along and you don’t have to be a client of Gooding Accounts.
If you are already a client, our support team will be on hand following the seminar to book you a follow up appointment with your client manager.
During your follow-up meeting, you’ll be provided with a clear and detailed plan outlining what you need to do next, helping to ensure you’re ready well before the April deadline.
